Lyrics

They sing his songs out in cotton fields an’ deep down in those mines
In those factories and eighteen-wheelers rollin’ down the line
He spoke for the poor an’ beaten down, and all those prisoners doin’ time
Knew all ’bout sorrow, grief an’ heart-ache, an’ livin’ an’ dyin’

He sang ’bout faith, hope an’ charity, ’bout what makes life so hard
The words came from his soul, the feelings from his heart
Sang songs ’bout love, life an’ freedom, things that bind us to our past
Every time he walked on stage and said, “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.”

Born to a poor share-cropping family in Southern Arkansas
All through his life he never forgot where as a boy he got his start
Singin’ gospel hymns with his family on the front porch of their shack
Long before he was a legend known everywhere as The Man in Black

He sang ’bout faith, hope an’ charity, ’bout what makes life so hard
The words came from his soul, the feelings from his heart
Sang songs ’bout love, life an’ freedom, things that bind us to our past
Every time he walked on stage and said, “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.”

Through all his times of darkness he had one shining star
She meant the world to him, through thick and thin their love was a burning fire
He sang about their kind of love and his feelings at the time
Wrote his first big hit in ’56, called, “I Walk the Line.”

He found strength, faith an’ comfort from the words that Jesus said
And from the verses and the chapters in the Bible that he read
Now we’re all lookin’ forward to the day that will come to pass
We see him on that stage in Heaven sayin’, “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.”

He sang ’bout faith, hope an’ charity, ’bout what makes life so hard
The words came from his soul, the feelings from his heart
Sang songs ’bout love, life an’ freedom, things that bind us to our past
Every time he said, “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.”
